JK: Tell me about season 4. Did David come to you and say, "I want to put McNulty in the background to tell the kids' story,"
or did you go to him and say, "I'm really busy and can't be here," or what?
DW: I wanted some time off, and he said to me that season 4 would be a good time. So I went to London and did two plays,
and just came in and shot everything for the season in a couple of weeks. So I wasn't here at all for season 4, and it's by
far the best season. I don't think the two are related, however.
JK: I see you and Bunk are still partners. [Glen Martin, Heather]
DW: We still sit across the office from each other, and I'm out causing trouble, and he's very disapproving. So we have a lot
of me saying something and him grunting disapproval.
JK: What do you think about the Emmys? You weren't surprised, were you?
DW: I was a bit. I thought season 4 was really in a different league, even for "The Wire." It really elevated it.
It really has taken television to a deeper level, even though that may be a bit pretentious to say.
