Q: How many episodes do you get to shoot in Season 5? When do you
start? Do you get more than 13 to finish the political story ("The
Hall")? [Greg A.]
A: We get what we need to tell the story. Right now, it feels like 10 or
so. Could be I could do it eight or nine. Could be I'll need to go a
little further. Ed, George, Bill, Chris and myself just sat down to
begin story meetings this week. The process is organic, but Chris
Albrecht told me to give it what it needs.
Q: If HBO asked for a 6th season, would you do it? What would it be
about? How many seasons do you think a show can reasonably be sustained
with compelling stories? [Tony Harris, Mark Graham]
A: We have five stories. That's it for The Wire. If HBO wanted more in
the political sphere, we had conceived a political drama that could go
beyond those five arcs, but at this moment, they have all the Baltimore
story they want from us in five Wire seasons. There are other things
we want to write about, too, beyond Baltimore. The process is organic.
After much discussion over the past few years, the writers have five
themes that work with this universe and these characters -- beyond
that, anything we considered felt redundant with a previous theme or
insubstantial enough to drive the story for a full season's arc. Five
is the number.
Q: Are there any plans to update and publish Rafael's book to cover the
new seasons? [Greg A.]
A: Maybe at the end of the run. It's up to the publisher. If they want
it, we'll try.
